"WHITE MAN IN HAMMERSMITH PALAIS -
THE CLASH/JOE STRUMMER & PUNK-RASTA AXIS"

If imitation is a sincere form of flattery, the Clash were one of the most sincere bands to cover reggae tunes of the 60's & the 70's. Thanks to musical upbringing of Paul Simonon and Joe's ever insatiable appetite for "world music", we have here a sampling of songs that the band covered and also are associated with the band. A new book titled "Complete Clash" lists quite a lot of songs that the band played albeit during practices and soundchecks such as Althia & Donna's "Uptown Top Ranking", Bob Marley's "Dancing Shoes", Jimmy Cliff's "Harder They Come", Harry J's All Stars' "Liquidator", Desmond Dekker's "007 (Shanty Town)", Max Romeo/Lee Perry's "War In A Babylon". How cool would it be if someone somewhere somehow recorded these jewels in the rough?

Johnny "Rotten" Lydon, would claim on a BBC radio show that white groups should not cover reggae because "if it is not part of your heritage, you should leave it alone." Of course, he would play dub music while with the Public Image Limited. The boys and the other punks in mid 70's were in right place and right time to be exposed to great Jamaican music. While Don Letts, the great DJ at the Roxy is credited with opening up the punks to reggae music in certain circles, it surely had to be the boys own curiosity that must have led them to this road.

Discs 1 and 2 are mostly Clash associated songs. Disc 3 is exclusively Joe and his earliest influences are of more obscure songs. For further expansion of your reggae history, I suggest you seek out these artists. The 3CD Trojan Box Sets which currently total around 35+ are great source for all sorts of rare and obscure songs. Also seek out the "BBC Guide to Reggae with Mark Lamaar, Guest DJ Paul Simonon" and "Radio Clash - 103.8mhz" circulating amongst traders.
